The Importance of mindfulness to enhance productivity

One important part of growth is understanding your limitations. Life is not a race; task may have a time limit but there are reasons why some tasks need to be broken down. For phase two I really enjoyed learning about excel but I guided myself through the learning material so quickly I didn't grasp as much as I had hoped. Also, by moving too quickly I got burned out and the next tasks became tougher to keep up with. This brings me back to a story I heard when I was young an Aesop tale about a tortoise and a hare. Just because you may be faster doesn't mean you will win the race. We all have our limitations and sometimes slow and steady wins the race.

I will definitely be able to use what I learned about making tables and charts in real life. I want to create a budget sheet for my upcoming goals, and I want to keep practicing the easy methods like using sequence to fill out charts faster. I learned from the A6 Spreadsheet Analysis Trailer that it's not just about putting charts together; it's about keeping everything aesthetic. The font should be the same in similar sizes across the worksheet, the colors should be printable in black and white, sometimes icons are fun to add but unnecessary and distracting. I enjoyed piecing together the different elements.

For my Chapter I chose 5.6.3 Add and Average using the auto sum makes everything simpler. If you place the cursor below the total you want to add you can click the auto sum button and it will automatically total the numbers together. If you are working with only a few numbers you can press the equal sign and add each number with a plus sign. If you want to use the sum function you would type the equal sign, sum, open parenthesis and select the range of data you would like to sum. The same goes when you are looking for the average of a particular set of numbers you would type the equal sign, average, open parenthesis and select the range of numbers that you would like to average. These steps making adding and averaging much easier.

I am excited to learn more about Phase 3 and the creativity aspect of using PowerPoint. Looking ahead our A7 Mail Merge assignment seems a bit complex and might take some work to get right the first time. I have finally passed both practice exams for Excel and feel almost ready to take the real exam. I always get a bit sluggish toward the end of the semester, but I hope that I can shake it off. Good luck to everyone else on their success this semester and remember to slow down when necessary and be mindful.

  1. Hi Zakiyyah, I like how you explained learning as something that should not be rushed. It reminded me of a time when I tried to finish an Excel assignment quickly, thinking I understood everything, but when I reviewed it, I realized I made several mistakes. It looked complete at first, but it was not accurate. That was my reminder to slow down.

I also relate to what you said about burnout. Sometimes I try to move too fast just to finish, but I end up missing important details. Taking a bit more time actually helps me understand the material better and avoid doing the same work twice.

Your point about A6 is very true. It does not feel like a simple assignment, it feels like something that needs to be clear and professional. The information has to make sense, not just to me, but to anyone reading it.

I like your example of the tortoise and the hare. It shows that working steadily and carefully is more effective than rushing. Good luck with Phase 3 and A7, I hope everything goes well for you.

  2. Hey Zakiyyah, I agree, life is not a race and the tortoise and hare analogy really fits for this semester. The burnout feeling is real, especially when we are balancing life and other classes. I was trying to do everything at once and that usually creates exhaustion. By going in a steady pace and balancing the cadence of work, we can complete our assignments without all the stress. Have a great rest of the semester!

  3. I haven't thought of the hare and the tortoise fable from Aesop since childhood. Very apropos for IS101 or leaning in general :-) Efficacy over efficiency!

Glad to hear you will definitely be able to use what you learned in IS101 in real life.

I look forward to see how you will perform in Phase 3 and on A7 Mail Merge ^_^

  4. Hi Zakiyyah, I really liked your explanation of Chapter 5.6.3 because you made the steps for using AutoSum and Average very easy to understand. I agree that these tools make working in Excel much faster and more efficient, especially when dealing with large amounts of numbers.

  5. Hi Zakiyyah, the AutoSum feature does save a lot of time! For the A6 assignment, funny enough the aesthetic portion of it was what I struggled on instead of the functions.

  6. Hi Zakiyahh. I agree with your point that you should not rush on tasks. One of the reasons for that is that you might be more tempted to skip a step that is required for an assignment.

  7. The turtle and the hare, such a classic childhood story that overconfidence can lead to someone losing. What a great story and connection to your life and how you portrayed it with your post. Life is not a race and thank you for reminding me that. Everything just go by so fast that eventually you'll crash and burn when trying to keep up with others. Again, great inspiration for a student like me who haven't even experienced parenting yet. Great blog as always and finish strong this semester!

  8. Hello Zakiyyah, The Tortoise and The Hare is the perfect way to describe that exact feeling. Just like you I would rush through some of the labs and not truly retain information, sometimes even taking me twice as long since I had to go back and review. We are constantly moving and onto to next it's nice to be reminded to slow down again.

  9. Hi Zakiyyah, good comparison you have there, and I agree with you completely. Sometimes we try to move too fast and end up feeling overwhelmed or burned out, so your reminder about slowing down when necessary was really meaningful. Good luck to you as well in your upcoming semesters!

  10. Hi Zakiyyah, the tortoise and the hare comparison actually fits this class really well. I think a lot of people tried to move too fast and ended up burning out a little. I also never realized how much presentation and aesthetics mattered in Excel until A6.

  11. Hello Zakiyyah. I wish everything catered towards learning things slower and accurately. When I try to take my time I tend to end up frustrating myself until I eventually have to go to sleep. Maybe it's my penchant for questioning things until I gaslight myself into thinking I've got it wrong that needs some introspection. You've got some good insight, being able to take things at a slower pace is also a skill. Sometimes a little reminder of that fact is important!

  12. Hi Zakiyyah, I loved how you pointed out being able to find the pace that's best for you will always be the best for you. Being able to understand that is life-changing and a great way to accomplish such things.

  14. I love the "One important part of growth is understanding your limitations." and " Life is not a race." quotes from you Zakkiyah! It helps me feel better about things I have always been stressing out about. I am 22 and I feel like I should have graduated by now and started working, but I'm not even halfway there yet for my bachelor's degree. I took this class for an associate's degree I decided to transfer to, but I decided to follow my dreams and you are right. Life is not a race and we all have different paces to success. :)

  15. Hey Zakiyyah, I'm reading this and I've been so focused on trying to get stuff done and over with and it hasn't worked. I'm just taking the time now to finish my AA and I want to live a fulfilling life with a satisfying career. Thanks for this.

  16. Hi Zakiyyah! I too would like to make spreadsheets for budgeting or work related activities. I'm so thankful this class taught me the skills necessary in order to do so!
