Vibrant Learner

Hello,

My name is Zakiyyah and I am a second-year student at the College of Southern Nevada. My first impression of IS101 is that it is a very rigorous time-consuming class but also that is very beneficial. Something my mother used to say to me was that "nothing good comes easy". I am hoping with a bit of focus and determination that I make it through the next 14 weeks feeling a sense of accomplishment. My first impression of the College of Southern Nevada was a great sense of community. I have been to the annual job fair, visited the career center, joined the Student Leadership Academy, traveled with my peers to Carson City and was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success. I have had the pleasure of meeting many multicultural, intelligent and ambitious individuals.

I am very pleased to have taken steps to complete my education after 15 years. Truth be told I applied a few times and decided not to take the leap, I was told the education in Nevada did not compare to the level of education in California, so I planned on returning to California to continue my education. I decided to stay in Las Vegas because it is more affordable than Ventura County and my husband gave me the push I needed to continue my education. I thought it may have been too late to go back to school or that I would not be able to handle the material. CSN leadership has been truly inspiring and although I am excited for graduation and to continue forward in my education, I am also sad to leave.

For my skill of choice, I chose 2.3.5 Shared Storage-Map a Drive to a Shared Folder. My experience with this skill was from my previous job working at Caesars Palace as a hotel manager. We often had to share files with each other so anytime we would get a new computer we would have to make sure we shared the existing drives so we could edit and share the same information. This was very beneficial because we had to update and distribute reports hourly to upper management and having a shared drive meant any individual with access could assist with this task.

I have high hopes of being a successful college student and keeping my grade point average above a 3.5. I plan to transfer to UNLV to complete my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree. The end goal is to find a higher paid position in a career where I have little or no hands-on experience. I have a passion for economics, the way that the economy controls how or why products are manufactured and distributed has always piqued my interest. I recently discovered I also have an interest in accounting, discovering how companies can make a comeback with the right financial tools and budget is incredible. I have a feeling that my interest and goals will change over the next 3 years, but I am enjoying the journey. If you were able to make it through my blog thank you for reading my story. I hope I was able to inspire at least one individual to keep on learning.

  1. A passion for Economics and recently discovered an interest in Accounting, Zakiyyah?

I completed my journey to earn my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with two majors different than your passion and interest listed above almost three decades ago. I think you will enjoy your journey :-)

Sharing drives/files with your team members to accomplish a singular goal (i.e. update & distribute reports) is good. Sharing impetus (i.e. your husband gave you the push) and wisdom (i.e. "nothing good comes easy" from your mom) is better!

Welcome to IS101-3003, Spring 2026 and you will make it through the next fourteen weeks, Vibrant Learner ^_^

  2. Zakiyyah, going back to school after 15 years while balancing work and family is a lot. I saw you worked at Caesars the shared drive skill sounds like something you really used. I hope staying in Vegas worked out better than California would have. Honestly, when everything’s pulling you left and right, you just do what you can. Good luck on the next steps.

  3. Hi Zakiyyah! I really admire your courage, and I’m glad to see you are almost ready to graduate—congratulations to you, and good luck on your journey! I also liked the example you shared about using shared drives at your job at Caesars Palace. It’s interesting to see how skills from this class connect to real work situations.
Also, I noticed you mentioned being inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success. I’ve been curious about that organization, so if you happen to see my comment, I’d love to hear a little more about what they do there and what your experience has been like.

  4. Hello Zakiyyah, it takes a lot of drive to go back to school after a while. It's really intimidating, but having a set goal in mind really helps give a push in the direction needed. I've never had a job where I used Microsoft word, so all of this is unfamiliar to me, it's nice to see that the information I'm learning will be useful in the future. I also thinks it's really admirable that you're involved in the academic community. I bet you'll do great.

I completely agree that "nothing good comes easy," and your background at Caesars Palace is a perfect real-world example of why mapping shared drives is so vital for business efficiency. Good luck with your 3.5 GPA goal and your future transfer to UNLV for Business Administration!

  8. Hi Zakiyahh. I have hopes that you will get into a new career in business administration. Someone who has experience working in hotels has a high chance of being accepted into career that requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

  10. "Nothing good comes easy" and I say I fully agree to that. Not everything in life is handed in a silver platter and we have to make the best of it to achieve our goals. More power to your journey!

  13. Hi Zakiyyah, I'm from California and started 3rd grade here in Las Vegas, the cost of living in California is nuts right now, especially considering the state of our country. I can sort of relate but it is harder to return to school after being out for so long but since I started CSN in 2022 I have been done semesters and taken a year off; But from the praise by our Professor, you are a One Woman Army and have gotten so much distance than some of us in terms of progress in the class so I got to applaud you. from 2.3.5 I haven't needed to share anything besides sending in assignments and professors just wanting permissions but wow, I used to work at Mandalay Bay as a lifeguard, so I was far from electronics. I am glad that you explained why this is useful and since reading about this, in case I do need to, I know now just in case, Thank you.

  14. Hi Zakiyyah, it’s inspiring that you decided to return to school after 15 years and continue your education. That takes a lot of determination. I also liked the quote you mentioned about nothing good coming easy because it really applies to college and classes like IS101. It’s great that you’ve been involved in so many activities at CSN and building connections on campus. Your experience using shared drives at Caesars Palace is also a great real-world example of how these skills are useful at work. Good luck with the rest of the semester and with your goal of transferring to UNLV.

  15. Hello Zakiyyah, cool to know you're interested in Economics and Accounting. I still have to take my required Economics courses but so far Accounting has been interesting. If you're interested, I recommend Michael Mcdonald for Accounting 201 and 202. Good luck with your degree!

  16. Hi Zakiyyah, It's awesome you are continuing your education after 15 years. I came back after 10 years to continue mine as well. I wish you luck on the rest of your journey at UNLV.

  17. Hey Zakkiyah! I love the quote that you got from your mom, she is right about the "Nothing good comes easy" thing. The harder something is, the less that people would want to do it. That will make something unique and uncrowded, if only a few people do something then it makes them stand out. I'm glad that you applied this quote to yourself and academic journey, you sound like an inspiring person who's full of determination. :)
